Abstract
Fiber optic cable assemblies and related components, securing methods, and fiber optic cable preparation methods for securing of a fiber optic cable to a retention body and/or fiber optic connector are disclosed. An end portion of the fiber optic cable is prepared and inserted into a retention body or the like for securing the cable to the same. In one embodiment, a partially exposed portion of a strength component and a portion of a cable jacket are secured to a retention body while another portion of the strength component remains secured to the cable jacket. In this manner, the fiber optic cable is secured to the retention body while the strength component and the cable jacket also remain secured to each other for providing strain relief.
Claims34
A fiber optic cable assembly, comprising:
- a fiber optic cable having an end portion, the end portion including at least a portion of one strength component and a portion of a cable jacket, wherein the at least a portion of one strength component is partially exposed at the end portion;
- and
- a retention body having a retention body passage extending therethrough, wherein the end portion of the fiber optic cable is disposed inside the retention body passage and secured to the retention body.
A fiber optic cable assembly, comprising:
- a fiber optic cable having an end portion, the end portion including at least one strength component and a cable jacket, wherein a portion of the cable jacket is removed creating a partially exposed portion of the at least one strength component;
- and
- a retention body defining a retention body passage extending therethrough, wherein the end portion of the fiber optic cable is disposed inside the retention body passage and the partially exposed portion of the at least one strength component is secured to the retention body.
A fiber optic cable assembly, comprising:
- a fiber optic cable having an end portion, the end portion including a first strength component, a second strength component, and a cable jacket secured to a portion of the first strength component and a portion of the second strength component;
- a retention body comprising a retention body passage defined by the retention body and extending therethrough, wherein the end portion of the fiber optic cable is disposed inside the retention body passage, and a partially exposed portion of the first strength component and a partially exposed portion of the second strength component are secured to the retention body;
- a first bonding chamber formed between an interior surface of the retention body and the end portion of the fiber optic cable;
- a fiber optic connector sub-assembly being attached to the retention body;
- and
- a plug housing, wherein the retention body is at least partially disposed within the plug housing.
A method of assembling a fiber optic cable assembly, comprising the steps of:
- providing a fiber optic cable having at least one optical fiber, at least one strength component, and a cable jacket;
- exposing a portion of the at least one optical fiber at an end portion of the fiber optic cable;
- removing a portion of the cable jacket, thereby creating a partially exposed portion of the at least one strength component at the end portion of the fiber optic cable;
- inserting the end portion of the fiber optic cable into a retention body passage defined by a retention body so the at least one optical fiber extends to a front opening defined by the retention body;
- and
- securing the end portion of the fiber optic cable to the retention body.
