Abstract
A processing apparatus which is suitable for signal communication with a system having at least one of an input module and an output module. The processing apparatus can be configured to receive input signals from the input module of the system. The processing apparatus includes a first channel processing portion to which the input signals are communicable. The first channel processing portion can be configurable to receive and process the input signals in a manner such that bass frequency audio signals are extracted from the input signals. The bass frequency audio signals can be further processed via at least one of linear dynamic range processing, manipulation of dynamic range via compression and manipulation of dynamic range via expansion.

A processing apparatus suitable for signal communication with a system having at least one of an input module and an output module, the processing apparatus being configurable to receive input signals from the input module of the system, the processing apparatus comprising:
- a first channel processing portion to which the input signals are communicable, the first channel processing portion being configurable to receive and process the input signals, the input signals being processed in a manner such that bass frequency audio signals are extracted from the input signals, the bass frequency audio signals being further processed via at least one of linear dynamic range processing, manipulation of dynamic range via compression and manipulation of dynamic range via expansion, the first channel processing portion comprising:
- a low frequency processing portion which includes:
- a first dynamic range compressor (DRC) which receives and processes the bass frequency audio signals via at least one of linear dynamic range processing, manipulation of dynamic range via compression and manipulation of dynamic range via expansion to produce processed bass frequency audio signals;
- a splitter which is coupled to the first DRC and which receives and further processes the processed bass frequency audio signals to produce a first bass portion and a second bass portion;
- and
- a low frequency adjustment module which is coupled to the splitter and which receives and processes the second bass portion to produce a processed second bass portion, and
- a sub-channel combiner module coupled to the splitter and the low frequency adjustment module, the sub-channel combiner module receiving and processing the first bass portion and the processed second bass portion to produce a first channel signal,
- wherein the first channel signal is communicable to the output module.
A method for processing signals communicated from an audio source, the signals communicated from the audio source include a left channel audio signal and a right channel audio source, both of which being processable to produce at least one input combination signal, the method comprising:
- a signal processing step which includes a first channel processing step at which the at least one input combination signal is received and processed at a first channel processing portion, processing the at least one input combination signal at the first channel processing portion includes:
- extracting, via an extraction step, bass frequency audio signals from the at least one input combination signal;
- processing, via a dynamic range processing step, the bass frequency audio signals via at least one of linear dynamic range processing, manipulation of dynamic range via compression and manipulation of dynamic range via expansion to produce processed bass frequency audio signals;
- processing, via a splitting step, the processed bass frequency audio signals to produce a first bass portion and a second bass portion;
- processing, via an adjustment step, the second bass portion to produce a processed second bass portion;
- and
- processing, via a combining step, the first bass portion and the processed second bass portion to produce a first channel signal.
