Abstract
An adhesive and method for hot melt adhesive application. The adhesive comprises polyolefin base polymer and from 1 to 15 wt % of a at least two wax components, based on the total weight of the polyolefin base polymer and the at least two wax components, wherein the at least two wax components comprise a first wax component having a relatively low weight average molecular weight at least 1000 g/mole less than a second wax component having a relatively high weight average molecular weight. The adhesive may have at least 50% fiber tear at 25° C., and a characteristic set time of less than 3 seconds. The adhesive may also include from 1 to 10 wt % of at least one functionalized polyolefin.
Claims24
An adhesive comprising a polyolefin base polymer and from 1 to 15 wt % of at least two wax components, based on the total weight of the polyolefin base polymer and the at least two wax components;
- wherein the at least two wax components comprise a first wax component and a second wax component wherein the weight average molecular weight of the second wax component (Mwwax2) is at least 1000 g/mole greater relative to the weight average molecular weight of the first wax component (Mwwax1), and wherein MWwax1 is less than about 4000 g/mole and MWwax2 is greater than about 5000 g/mole.
An adhesive comprising a polyolefin base polymer and from 1 to 15 wt % of at least two wax components, based on the total weight of the polyolefin base polymer and the at least two wax components, wherein the adhesive comprises at least 80 wt % of the polyolefin base polymer, wherein the polyolefin base polymer comprises a propylene copolymer comprising at least 80 wt % of units derived from propylene and from about 2 to about 15 wt % of units derived from at least one C6 to C10 alpha-olefin, wherein the copolymer has a molecular weight of less than 100,000 and a heat of fusion between about 10 and about 70 J/g, wherein the at least two wax components comprise a first wax component and a second wax component wherein the weight average molecular weight of the second wax component (Mwwax2) is at least 1000 g/mole greater relative to the weight average molecular weight of the first wax component (Mwwax1), and wherein Mwwax1 is less than about 4000 g/mole and Mwwax2 is greater than about 5000 g/mole.
A method of joining substrates, comprising maintaining a reservoir of molten hot melt adhesive, applying the hot melt adhesive from the reservoir to a first substrate, placing a second substrate in contact with the adhesive applied to the first substrate, and applying adhering pressure for a period of time about equal to or greater than the characteristic set time of the adhesive, characterized by introducing into the reservoir an adhesive comprising a polyolefin base polymer and from 1 to 15 wt % of at least two wax components, based on the total weight of the polyolefin base polymer and the at least two wax components;
- wherein the at least two wax components comprise a first wax component and a second wax component wherein the weight average molecular weight of the second wax component (Mwwax2) is at least 1000 glmole greater relative to the weight average molecular weight of the first wax component (Mwwax1) and wherein Mwwax1 is less than about 4000 g/mole and Mwwax2 is greater than about 5000 g/mole.
