Abstract
An instability mitigation system is disclosed, comprising a stator stage located axially proximate to a rotor, the stator stage having a row of a plurality of stator vanes arranged around a centerline axis, and a mitigation system comprising at least one plasma actuator mounted on the stator vane that facilitates the improvement of the stability of the rotor, and a control system for controlling the operation of the mitigation system. An instability mitigation system further comprising a detection system for detecting an onset of an instability in a rotor and a control system for controlling the detection system and the mitigation system are disclosed.
Claims23
An instability mitigation system for a rotor, the system comprising:
- a detection system comprising a sensor capable of generating an input signal corresponding to a flow parameter;
- a correlation processor that receives the input signal and a rotor speed signal and generates a stability correlation signal;
- and
- a mitigation system that facilitates the improvement of the stability of the rotor when an onset of instability is detected by the detection system wherein the mitigation system comprises at least one plasma actuator mounted on a stator stage that is located in axial proximity to the rotor;
- a control system for controlling the detection system and the mitigation system;
- wherein the control system comprises a controller that controls an AC potential applied to a first electrode and a second electrode of the plasma actuator;
- and
- wherein the controller controls the AC potential by pulsing the AC potential at a selected frequency.
An instability mitigation system for a rotor, the system comprising:

- a correlation processor that receives the input signal and a rotor speed signal and generates a stability correlation signal;
- and
- a mitigation system that facilitates the improvement of the stability of the rotor when an onset of instability is detected by the detection system wherein the mitigation system comprises at least one plasma actuator mounted on a stator stage that is located in axial proximity to the rotor;
- a control system for controlling the detection system and the mitigation system;
- wherein the control system comprises a controller that controls an AC potential applied to a first electrode and a second electrode of the plasma actuator;
- and
- wherein the controller pulses the AC potential in-phase with a multiple of the vortex shedding frequency at a blade tip.
An instability mitigation system for a rotor, the system comprising:
