Abstract
A method for manufacturing a continuous sucker rod coil, wherein the method includes the step of selecting a plurality of input coils, each input coil having the same uniform hardness, and each input coil having two free ends. The method further includes the step of fusing adjacent free ends of adjacent input coils together to form one continuous length of rod, the fusing creating fused areas and a heat-affected zone at each fused area. The method also includes the step of treating each of the heat-affected zones to alleviate irregularities induced during fusing. Additionally, the method includes the step of winding the continuous length of rod into a finished coil.
Claims34
A method of manufacturing a continuous sucker rod coil comprising:
- selecting a plurality of input coils, each input coil having two free ends and a hardness that is uniform longitudinally and cross-sectionally within a specified range wherein each input coil includes micro-alloying elements that enhance formation of a micro-structure which exhibits a higher Ultimate Tensile Strength/yield strength ratio;
- fusing adjacent free ends of adjacent input coils together by flash-butt welding to form one continuous length of rod, said fusing creating a heat-affected zone at a fused joint, and said continuous length of rod having a non heat-affected zone adjacent said fused joint;
- treating each of said heat-affected zones to alleviate irregularities induced during fusing by heating and then cooling said heat-affected zones;
- and
- winding said continuous length of rod into a finished coil.
A method of manufacturing a continuous sucker rod coil comprising:
- selecting one or more input coils, each input coil having two free ends and a hardness that is uniform longitudinally and cross-sectionally within a specified range wherein each input coil includes micro-alloying elements that enhance formation of a micro-structure which exhibits a higher Ultimate Tensile Strength/yield strength ratio;
- inspecting said input coil for flaws;
- marking said flaws;
- removing said flaws creating further free ends in said input coil;
- fusing adjacent free ends together by flash-butt welding to form one continuous length of rod, each of said fusing creating a heat-affected zone at a fused joint, and said continuous length of rod having a non heat-affected zone adjacent said fused joint;
- treating each of said heat-affected zones to alleviate irregularities induced during fusing using a tempering and cooling process;
- and
- winding said continuous length of rod into a finished coil.
A method of manufacturing a continuous sucker rod coil, the method comprising:
- selecting a plurality of input coils having a hardness that is uniform longitudinally and cross-sectionally within a specified range wherein each input coil includes micro-alloying elements that enhance formation of a micro-structure which exhibits a higher Ultimate Tensile Strength/yield strength ratio;
- straightening each input coil;
- fusing adjacent ends of adjacent input coils together by flash-butt welding to form a continuous length of rod, the fusing creating a heat-affected zone at a fused joint, and said continuous length of rod having a non heat-affected zone adjacent said fused joint
- stress relieving the heat-affected zone to alleviate residual stress induced during fusing;
- and
- winding the continuous length of rod into a finished coil.
