Abstract
A bus emulation device in accordance with one aspect of the present description includes an embedded microcontroller and a nonvolatile memory carried on a body. The memory contains firmware which includes boot code adapted to boot the microcontroller to operate in one of a plurality of dedicated operating modes in response to a mode switch. These dedicated operating modes include a learning mode in which bus signals generated by other bus devices are recorded in the nonvolatile memory, and an emulation mode in which recorded bus signals are retransmitted over the bus in response to received signals, to emulate a bus device. Other aspects are described and claimed.
Claims15
An emulation device for use with a bus external to said emulation device and for use with a target device external to said emulation device, comprising:
- a connector adapted to be coupled to said bus and adapted to receive and transmit signals between said device and said bus, said signals including query and response signals;
- an embedded microcontroller;
- a mode switch adapted to receive user selection of one of a dedicated learning mode and a dedicated emulation mode;
- and
- a nonvolatile memory including firmware stored therein, said firmware including boot code adapted to boot said microcontroller to said selected dedicated learning mode instead of said dedicated emulation mode in response to selection of said dedicated learning mode, and further adapted to reboot said microcontroller to said selected emulation mode instead of said dedicated learning mode in response to selection of said dedicated emulation mode, wherein in said learning mode, said microcontroller is controlled by said firmware to record in said nonvolatile memory query signals intended for said target device and received from said bus and to record in said nonvolatile memory, response signals transmitted by said target device and received from said bus and associated with recorded query signals intended for said target device;
- and wherein in said emulation mode, said microcontroller is controlled by said firmware to transmit recorded response signals to a bus external to said emulation device in response to receipt of associated query signals from a bus external to said emulation device and intended for said emulation device.
A method, comprising:
- connecting an emulation device to a bus external to said emulation device;
- a user selecting in a first selection, a dedicated learning mode instead of a dedicated emulation mode;
- booting an embedded microcontroller of said emulation device using firmware stored in a nonvolatile memory of said emulation device, to said selected dedicated learning mode instead of to said dedicated emulation mode in response to said first selection;
- operating said microcontroller in said selected dedicated learning mode controlled by said firmware to record in a nonvolatile memory of said microcontroller, query signals received from said bus and intended for a target device external to said emulation device, and to record in a nonvolatile memory of said microcontroller, response signals transmitted by said target device and received from said bus and associated with recorded query signals intended for said target device;
- a user selecting in a second selection, said dedicated emulation mode instead of said dedicated learning mode;
- rebooting said embedded microcontroller of said emulation device using firmware stored in said nonvolatile memory of said emulation device, to said selected dedicated emulation mode instead of said dedicated learning mode in response to said second selection;
- and
- emulating a target device, said emulating including operating said microcontroller in said selected dedicated emulation mode controlled by said firmware to receive query signals from a bus external to said emulation device and intended for said emulation device and transmit associated recorded response signals over a bus external to said emulation device.
