Device for electrically and mechanically stimulating a compartment in a body

A method comprising:

• providing a tube having at least one distendable element located along a length of the tube and at least one electrical component associated with the at least one distendable element;
• inserting at least a portion of the tube within a compartment in a body;
• distending the at least one distendable element so as to be in contact with select body tissues or organs;
• sensing pressure within in the compartment of the body;
• and
• either mechanically stimulating or electrically stimulating the compartment of the body based on the sensed pressure, wherein mechanically stimulating comprises sequentially pulsing the at least one distendable element against a portion of the compartment such that each pulse expands the at least one distendable element into a first position and contracts the at least one distendable element into a second position, wherein electrically stimulating comprises sequentially pulsing the at least one electrical component such that each pulse activates the at least one electrical component and deactivates the at least one electrical component.

A device comprising:

• at least a portion of a tube positionable in a compartment of a body and having a proximal end and a distal end;
• a first active portion located along the tube between the proximal end and distal end and positioned proximate to a first portion of the compartment of the body, the first active portion configured to provide a sequence of pulses of mechanical distension over a first period of time, wherein each pulse of mechanical distension includes an expansion and a contraction of the first active portion;
• and
• a second active portion located along the tube between the proximal end and the distal end and positioned proximate to a second portion of the compartment of the body that is different than the first portion of the compartment of the body, the second active portion configured to provide a sequence of pulses of electrical stimulation to the second portion of the compartment of the body over a second period of time.
