Abstract
An integrated circuit having a receiver that selectively inhibits incoming data from being used to update adaptively generated controls. Sampling circuitry generates a plurality of samples of an incoming signal. Control circuitry generates an inhibit signal in either a first state or a second state according to whether the plurality of samples meets a randomness criterion. Tap weight update circuitry receives the inhibit signal from the control circuitry and updates a plurality of equalizer tap weights based on the plurality of samples if the inhibit signal is in the first state. The tap weight update circuitry refrains from updating the plurality of equalizer tap weights based on the plurality of samples if the inhibit signal is in the second state.
Claims28
A method, comprising:
- generating a plurality of samples of a signal;
- storing the plurality of samples in at least one storage circuit;
- processing the plurality of samples to form each of (a) a sequence of data words and (b) a sequence of data snapshots, each data word and the sequence of data snapshot having respective starting and ending framing boundaries, the starting framing boundary of the data snapshots and the starting framing boundary of the data words precessed relative to one another over the sequence of data words and the sequence of data snapshots;
- determining from the data snapshots one or more equalization settings for the signal;
- and
- applying the one or more equalization settings to an equalizer to equalize the signal.
A method of determining an equalization setting based on a signal received at a receiver integrated circuit, the method comprising:
- in the receiver integrated circuit
- using a sampler to generate a plurality of samples of the signal,
- storing the plurality of samples in at least one storage circuit, and
- organizing the plurality of samples into both
- a sequence of data words, and
- a sequence of data snapshots,
- wherein the sequence of data snapshots and the sequence of data words are precessed relative to one another;
- and
- processing the data snapshots to update an equalization setting for at least one equalizer tap, without regard to whether the data words reflect statistical periodicity.
A method of operation within a signaling system having a receiver integrated circuit that receives a signal, comprising:
- using a sampler in the receiver circuit to generate a plurality of samples of the signal;
- producing a sequence of data words based on the plurality of samples;
- determining at least one equalization setting to apply to the signal, by
- (a) taking plural subsets of the plurality of samples, the subsets and data words precessed relative to one another,
- (b) processing data in the plural subsets associated with a specific tap latency represented by the at least one equalization setting, and
- (c) updating the at least one equalization setting based on the processing.
