## CPC

- H04L: TRANSMISSION OF DIGITAL INFORMATION, e.g. TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION (arrangements common to telegraphic and telephonic communication H04M)

## Abstract

Apparatus, and an associated method, for a communication device operable pursuant to a push content communication scheme. An instruction detector detects a message containing a instruction by which to operate upon push content. The message is, for instance, generated by a mobile station at which an application associated with the content is resident. Once detected by the instruction detector, a content operator operates upon the content in a manner corresponding to the instruction contained in the detected message. Once operated upon, the content is stored at a storage element, available when an application of which the content is associated, becomes active.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method in a mobile station configurable to run an application associated with an application server, said method comprising:
receiving a push notification, the push notification including at least a content processing instruction and content associated with the application;
detecting the content processing instruction included in the push notification; and
operating upon the content in accordance with the content processing instruction as a background operation when the application is not active.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the push notification is received from a proxy server that delivers push notifications to the mobile station.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the push notification received from the proxy server was originated from the application server.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said operations of receiving, detecting, and operating are performed by a client push agent of the mobile station.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein said client push agent comprises an instruction detector and a content operator.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
upon completion of said operating, providing the content to the application.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein said providing includes alerting the application that the content is ready.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
upon completion of said operating, storing the content at a storage entity of the mobile station.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the push notification comprises a message having a defined message definition structure that indicates a background processing property.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the message comprises an XML, Extensible Mark-up Language, message.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the push notification comprises a binary message encapsulated in an XML, Extensible Mark-up Language, message.

### Claim 12

A mobile station configurable to run an application associated with an application server, said mobile station comprising:
a processor configured to:
receive a push notification, the push notification including at least a content processing instruction and content associated with the application,
detect the content processing instruction included in the push notification, and
operate upon the content in accordance with the content processing instruction as a background operation when the application is not active.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The mobile station of claim 12, wherein the processor is configured to receive the push notification from a proxy server that delivers push notifications to the mobile station.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The mobile station of claim 12, wherein the processor is further configured to:
after operating upon the content, provide the content to the application.

### Claim 15

A mobile station configurable to run an application associated with an application server, said mobile station comprising:
a client push agent configured to receive a push notification, the push notification including at least a content processing instruction and content associated with the application,
wherein the client push agent includes
an instruction detector configured to detect the content processing instruction included in the push notification, and
a content operator configured to operate upon the content in accordance with the content processing instruction as a background operation, said operating occurring at a time when the application is not running.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The mobile station of claim 15, wherein the push notification is received from a proxy server that delivers push notifications to the mobile station.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

The mobile station of claim 15, wherein the client push agent is further configured to store the content once operated upon by the content operator at a storage element of the mobile station.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The mobile station of claim 17, further comprising:
the storage element configured to store the content once operated upon by the content operator.

### Claim 19 (depends on 15)

The mobile station of claim 15, wherein the push notification comprises an XML, Extensible Mark-up Language, message.

### Claim 20 (depends on 15)

The mobile station of claim 15, wherein the push notification comprises a binary message encapsulated in an XML, Extensible Mark-up Language, message.

### Claim 21 (depends on 15)

The mobile station of claim 15, wherein the push notification is communicated to the mobile station pursuant to a push notification communication scheme.

### Claim 22

A method in a mobile station configurable to run an application associated with a application server, said method comprising:
receiving a push notification, the push notification including at least a content processing instruction and content associated with the application; and
causing the content in the push notification to be processed, wherein
if the application is active, the push notification is processed by the application performing foreground processing, and
if the application is not active, the push notification is processed by a push client agent of the mobile station performing background processing in accordance with the content processing instruction.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The method of claim 22, wherein if the application is not active, said causing the content in the push notification to be processed further comprises:
after the push notification is processed by the push client agent, storing the content at a storage entity of the mobile station.
