Abstract
The present invention relates to a process for preparing 1,2-propanediol, in which a glycerol-containing stream, especially a stream obtained on the industrial scale in the production of biodiesel, is subjected to a low pressure hydrogenation.
Claims24
A process for preparing 1,2-propanediol comprises
- a) providing a glycerol-containing stream having a water content of less than 20% by weight, and
- b) subjecting the glycerol-containing stream to a hydrogenation in the presence of a heterogeneous copper catalyst at a pressure of less than 100 bar, the catalyst comprising the following metals in oxidic form, reduced form or a combination thereof:
- Cu, Al, at least one further metal selected from La, W, Mo, Ti, Zr.
