Abstract
A fuel cell including an anode conductive layer, an anode catalyst layer, an electrolyte membrane, a cathode catalyst layer, a cathode conductive layer, and a cathode diffusion layer stacked in this order, in which the cathode diffusion layer has a fabric structure in which a water-swellable fiber and a non-water-swellable fiber are arranged. Preferably, in the fabric structure, the water-swellable fiber is arranged in either one of a warp and a weft. Preferably, gas permeability of the cathode diffusion layer increases as the water absorption amount of the water-swellable fiber increases.
Claims10
A fuel cell comprising:
- an anode conductive layer, an anode catalyst layer, an electrolyte membrane, a cathode catalyst layer, a cathode conductive layer, and a cathode diffusion layer stacked in this order, wherein said cathode diffusion layer has a fabric structure in which a water-swellable fiber and a non-water-swellable fiber are arranged;
- wherein the non-water-swellable fiber comprises a natural fiber, a cellulose-based chemical fiber, or a synthetic resin;
- wherein the water-swellable fiber has a swelling coefficient of 5% or higher and the non-water-swellable fiber has a swelling coefficient of less than 5%;
- wherein the swelling coefficients of the water-swellable fiber and non-water-swellable fiber are determined by the following formula:
- swelling coefficient (%)=100×{(fiber length in swelled condition)−(fiber length in dry condition)}/(fiber length in dry condition);
- and
- wherein the dry condition is a condition of the fiber after 24 hours in an environment of 20° C. and a relative humidity of 65%, and wherein the swelled condition is a condition of the fiber after dipping for 5 minutes in water having a temperature of 20° C.
