## Abstract

The invention relates generally to digestive disorders, and in particular to methods for treating irritable bowel syndrome by increasing carbohydrate absorption by administering a composition containing a Bacillus coagulans bacterium.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for increasing fructose digestion in a subject, comprising identifying a subject suffering from fructose intolerance, and orally administering to said subject a composition comprising an effective amount of viable Bacillus coagulans bacteria wherein said bacteria are selected from the group consisting of GBI-20 (ATCC PTA-6085), GBI-30 (ATCC PTA-6086), and GBI-40 (ATCC PTA-6087) and an effective amount of a supplemental fructase to increase fructose digestion in said subject.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said subject is human.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said effective amount of fructase is from 1000 IU to 12,000 IU.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said fructase is an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of fructose.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is in the form of a capsule, a tablet, a powder, a liquid, or a food product.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is administered once per day.
