Abstract
Systems and methods for providing deeper knee flexion capabilities, more physiologic load bearing and improved patellar tracking for knee prosthesis patients. Such systems and methods include (i) adding more articular surface to the antero-proximal posterior condyles of a femoral component, including methods to achieve that result, (ii) modifications to the internal geometry of the femoral component and the associated femoral bone cuts with methods of implantation, (iii) asymmetrical tibial components that have an unique articular surface that allows for deeper knee flexion than has previously been available and (iv) asymmetrical femoral condyles that result in more physiologic loading of the joint and improved patellar tracking.
Claims23
A knee prosthesis comprising:
- a femoral component having a posterior condyle surface, the femoral component further comprising a flexion component extending from the posterior condyle surface for interacting with an articular surface of a tibia, the flexion component comprising a first circular arc having a first end connected to the posterior condyle surface, the posterior condyle surface comprising a second circular arc, the first and second circular arcs forming a reverse curve.
A method of applying a femoral component to a femur of a patient, the method comprising:
- providing a femoral component having
- a medial femoral articular surface;
- and
- a lateral femoral articular surface;
- wherein at least one of the medial femoral articular surface and the lateral femoral articular surface comprises a posterior condyle surface further comprising a flexion component extending from the posterior condyle surface, the flexion component comprising a first circular arc having a first end connected to the posterior condyle surface, the posterior condyle surface comprising a second circular arc, the first and second circular arcs forming a reverse curve;
- preparing the femur to receive the femoral component, including removing bone from a distal end of the femur;
- positioning the femoral component adjacent the distal end of the femur, wherein the femoral component is in a pre-rotated position such that an anterior portion of the femoral component is positioned distally and posteriorly from a final position of the femoral component;
- positioning the femoral component such that a posterior portion of the femoral component contacts a posterior portion of the distal end of the femur;
- and
- rotating the femoral component until the anterior portion of the femoral component seats against an anterior portion of the distal end of the femur.
A knee prosthesis comprising:
- a femoral component having a medial femoral articular surface, a posterior condyle surface, and a lateral femoral articular surface, the femoral component further comprising a flexion component extending from the posterior condyle surface, the flexion component comprising a first circular arc having a first end connected to the posterior condyle surface, the posterior condyle surface comprising a second circular arc, the first and second circular arcs forming a reverse curve, wherein the lateral femoral articular surface has a medial-lateral width of a most distal portion of the lateral femoral articular surface less than 75% of a medial-lateral width of a most distal portion of the medial femoral articular surface.
