Systems and methods for retimed virtual data processing

A method for data processing, the method comprising:

• receiving an analog input;
• converting the analog input into a first series of data samples, wherein each bit of the first series of data samples corresponds to the analog input at a time controlled by an updated sampling clock;
• modifying the updated sampling clock based at least in part upon a processed version of the first series of data samples;
• interpolating a derivative of the first series to reverse an effect of modifying the updated sampling clock, wherein a first interpolated series of data samples is provided that mimics a series of data samples corresponding to the analog input that were sampled using a free running clock;
• and
• interpolating the first interpolated series of data samples to adjust each bit in accordance with an average frequency offset exhibited across the first interpolated series of data samples to yield a second interpolated series of data samples.

A hard disk drive system, the system comprising:

• a storage medium;
• a read/write head assembly disposed in relation to the storage medium;
• an analog to digital converter, wherein the analog to digital converter receives an analog input via the read/write head assembly, wherein the analog to digital converter provides a first series of data samples, and wherein each bit of the first series of data samples corresponds to the analog input at a time controlled by an updated sampling clock;
• an online timing loop, wherein the online timing loop modifies the updated sampling clock based at least in part upon a processed version of the first series of data samples;
• and
• an offline timing loop, wherein the offline timing loop interpolates a derivative of the first series of data samples to yield a second series of data samples, wherein the second series of data samples mimics a series of data samples corresponding to the analog input that were sampled using a free running clock;
• and wherein the second series of data samples is interpolated to adjust each bit in accordance with an average frequency offset exhibited across the second series of data samples.
