Method of load balancing edge-enabled applications in a content delivery network (CDN)

Apparatus, comprising:

• a processor,
• computer memory holding computer program instructions executed by the processor to perform a load balancing method, the method comprising:
• for each of a set of machines that is provisioned with a manager process and an application server on which one or more web applications are loaded and executed, identifying a resource usage value;
• using the values to generate a weighted mapping of web applications to manager processes for the set of machines such that the resource usage value for each machine is not exceeded, and wherein the weighted mapping of web applications to manager processes balances a given resource value across the set of machines;
• servicing requests at the machines in proportion to the weighted mapping;
• and
• selectively re-generating the weighted mapping of web applications to manager processes for the set of machines if the resource usage values across the set of machines becomes unbalanced.
