A mobile device, comprising:
- a medium access controller;
- and
- an antenna configured to:
- transmit channel quality indicator information to a base station, a first relay node, and a second relay node;
- receive a first packet from the base station, wherein the first packet is transmitted to the mobile device from the first relay node, wherein first packet resources for the mobile device are distributively scheduled by the first relay node and wherein the first relay node serves the mobile device non-cooperatively using time-frequency resources determined by the first relay node;
- receive a second packet from the base station, wherein second packet resources for the mobile device are centrally scheduled by the base station using time-frequency resources determined by the base station;
- receive a third packet from the base station, wherein the third packet is transmitted to the mobile device from the second relay node, wherein third packet resources for the mobile device are centrally scheduled for the second relay node using time-frequency resources determined by the base station and wherein the second relay node serves the mobile device cooperatively by coordinating scheduling information with the base station;
- and
- wherein the first packet, the second packet and the third packet are time-division multiplexed.

A method, comprising:
- transmitting, by a base station, a first packet for a receive node using a first relay node, wherein first packet resources for the receive node are distributively scheduled by the first relay node and wherein the first relay node serves the receive node non-cooperatively using time-frequency resources determined by the first relay node;
- transmitting by the base station, a second packet for the receive node, wherein second packet resources for the receive node are centrally scheduled by the base station using time-frequency resources determined by the base station;
- transmitting by the base station, a third packet for the receive node using a second relay node, wherein third packet resources for the receive node are centrally scheduled for the second relay node using time-frequency resources determined by the base station and wherein the second relay node serves the receive node cooperatively by coordinating scheduling information with the base station;
- and
- wherein the first packet, the second packet and the third packet are time-division multiplexed.

A method for mitigating interference in a wireless communications network, the method comprising:
- identifying target nodes with a base station, wherein a first group of target nodes are configured to communicate with the base station;
- identifying a relay node with the base station, the relay node configured to communicate with a second group of target nodes;
- classifying the target nodes into layers, wherein a first layer of target nodes is centrally scheduled and a second layer of target nodes are distributively scheduled and wherein a target node of the first group of target nodes is not a member of the first layer of target nodes;
- determining centralized schedule information for the first layer of target nodes;
- transmitting the centralized schedule information to the relay node, wherein the relay node distributively schedules communications for the second layer of target nodes, and wherein the relay node is configured to randomize a plurality of transmissions from the relay node.

A base station, comprising:
- a medium access controller configured to determine first packet resources for a receive node;
- and
- transmit, by the base station, a first packet for a receive node using a first relay node, wherein the first packet resources for the receive node are centrally scheduled for the first relay node using time-frequency resources determined by the base station and wherein the first relay node serves the receive node cooperatively over a first channel using time-frequency resources determined by the base station;
- transmit by the base station, a second packet for the receive node over a second channel, wherein second packet resources for the receive node are centrally scheduled by the base station using time-frequency resources determined by the base station;
- transmit by the base station, a third packet for the receive node using a second relay node, wherein the third packet resources for the receive node are distributively scheduled by the second relay node and wherein the second relay node serves the receive node non-cooperatively over the second channel using time-frequency resources determined by the second relay node.
