Abstract
An optical fiber preform comprises a primary preform that includes at least one inner cladding and a central core deposited inside a fluorine doped silica tube. The fluorine doped silica tube has a cross section area that is no more than about 15 percent smaller than the cross section area of the primary preform. The optical fiber preform has a large capacity, may be manufactured at reduced cost, and may be drawn to produce an optical fiber having reduced transmission losses.
Claims23
An optical fiber preform, comprising:
- a primary preform comprising a central core, an inner cladding, and a fluorine doped silica tube, the inner cladding being positioned between the central core and the fluorine doped silica tube;
- wherein the fluorine doped silica tube has a cross section area no more than about 15 percent smaller than the cross section area of the primary preform.
An optical fiber preform, comprising:
- a primary preform comprising a central core, an inner cladding, and a fluorine doped silica tube, the inner cladding being positioned between the central core and the fluorine doped silica tube;
- and
- an overclad on an outer surface of the primary preform;
- wherein the fluorine doped silica tube has a cross section area no more than about 15 percent smaller than the cross section area of the primary preform.
An optical fiber preform, comprising:
- a primary preform comprising a central core, an inner cladding surrounding the central core, and a collapsed fluorine doped silica tube surrounding the inner cladding and the central core;
- and
- an overclad surrounding the primary preform;
- wherein the central core consists essentially of substantially pure silica;
- and
- wherein the fluorine doped silica tube has a cross section area no more than about 15 percent smaller than the cross section area of the primary preform.
