Abstract
A device for sustaining a plasma in a torch is provided. In certain examples, the device comprises a first electrode configured to couple to a power source and constructed and arranged to provide a loop current along a radial plane of the torch. In some examples, the radial plane of the torch is substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the torch.
Claims22
A device for generating a plasma in a torch body with a longitudinal axis along which a flow of gas is introduced during operation of the torch body and with a radial plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the torch body, the device comprising a first plate electrode comprising an aperture that receives a portion of the torch body, the first plate electrode configured to sustain a plasma within the portion of the torch body in the aperture of the first plate electrode, the first plate electrode configured to couple to a power source and constructed and arranged to provide a loop current along the radial plane of the portion of the torch body positioned in the aperture of the first plate electrode to sustain the plasma within the portion of the torch body positioned in the aperture of the first plate electrode.
A device for generating a plasma in a torch body with a longitudinal axis along which a flow of gas is introduced during operation of the torch and with a radial plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the torch body, the device comprising plate electrode means for providing a loop current along the radial plane of the torch body, the plate electrode means comprising an aperture that receives a portion of the torch body, in which the plate electrode means is configured to sustain a plasma within the portion of the torch body in the aperture of plate electrode means using the loop current.
A method of generating a plasma in a torch body with a longitudinal axis and with a radial plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the torch body, the method comprising:
- providing a gas flow along the longitudinal axis of the torch body:
- igniting the gas flow in the torch body:
- and
- providing a loop current along the radial plane of a portion of the torch body using a plate electrode comprising an aperture that receives the portion of the torch body to sustain a plasma in the portion of the torch body within the aperture of the plate electrode.
