Abstract
A method for the polymerization of free radically polymerizable vinyl monomers involves polymerizing free radically (co)polymerizable vinyl monomers in a batch reaction under essentially adiabatic conditions, and utilizing scavenger monomer to reduce undesirable residual monomer.
Claims20
A method of free radically polymerizing vinyl monomers comprising:
- (a) providing a non-heterogeneous mixture comprising:
- (i) free radically (co)polymerizable vinyl monomers,
- (ii) at least one thermal free radical initiator, and
- (iii) a scavenger monomer selected from the group consisting of:
- wherein R is a C1-C8 alkyl group,
- in a batch reactor, wherein the non-heterogeneous mixture of step (a) further comprises a solvent miscible in the non-heterogeneous mixture, wherein the solvent miscible in the non-heterogeneous mixture of step (a) is present in the non-heterogeneous mixture in an amount less than 20% by weight based on the total weight of the non-heterogeneous mixture of step (a);
- (b) deoxygenating the non-heterogeneous mixture if the mixture is not already deoxygenated;
- (c) heating the non-heterogeneous mixture to a sufficient temperature to generate sufficient initiator radicals from at least one thermal free radical initiator so as to initiate polymerization;
- (d) allowing the non-heterogeneous mixture to polymerize under essentially adiabatic conditions to yield an at least partially polymerized non-heterogeneous mixture;
- (e) adding additionally to the at least partially polymerized non-heterogeneous mixture at least one thermal free radical initiator;
- (f) deoxygenating the partially polymerized non-heterogeneous mixture if the mixture is not already deoxygenated;
- and
- (g) allowing the partially polymerized non-heterogeneous mixture to further polymerize under essentially adiabatic conditions to yield a molten polymer;
- wherein an additional scavenger monomer selected from the group consisting of:
- wherein R is a C1-C8 alkyl group, is added additionally to the at least partially polymerized non-heterogeneous mixture of step (d).
