Method of installation of intervertebral spacers

A method for implant installation between adjacent vertebral bodies of a patient, comprising the steps of:

• assembling a first implant onto a first insertion instrument to deliver the first implant to an intervertebral space;
• subsequently assembling a second implant onto the insertion instrument after delivering the implant to the intervertebral space;
• each of the implants having a support body and a rotatable insert therein;
• the support body having a curved shape extending laterally from a proximal end portion to a distal end portion, the distal end portion having a taper narrowing towards a distal most end;
• wherein the support body defines a first longitudinal opening extending longitudinally therethrough and wherein a plurality of protrusions are provided along superior and inferior end surfaces to facilitate prevention of expulsion of the implant once installed;
• wherein the support body defines a second longitudinal opening adjacent the proximal end to accommodate the rotatable insert therein and wherein the insert is cylindrical and is rotatable about a central longitudinal axis within the second longitudinal opening to permit the support body to rotate about the insert and the central longitudinal axis;
• wherein the insertion instrument extends along a longitudinal tool axis;
• moving the instrument to a first position wherein the first implant is rotationally fixed with respect to the longitudinal tool axis;
• placing the first implant into a patient through a transforaminal approach to locate the implant between adjacent vertebral bodies of a patient;
• impacting a proximal end of the instrument to provide force in the direction of the longitudinal tool axis and advance the implant further between the adjacent vertebral bodies into an intervertebral space therebetween;
• moving the instrument to a second position wherein the support body of the first implant is rotatable with respect to the insert of the first implant;
• impacting a proximal end of the instrument to provide force in the direction of the longitudinal tool axis and advance the implant further into the intervertebral space and against the interior of an epiphyseal ring of an annulus of an intervertebral disc to cause the first implant to rotate with respect to the longitudinal tool axis;
• disassembling the instrument from the first implant and removing the instrument from the patient;
• assembling the instrument to the second implant and moving the instrument to a first position wherein the second implant is rotationally fixed with respect to the longitudinal tool axis;
• placing the second implant into a patient through a transforaminal approach to locate the implant between adjacent vertebral bodies of a patient;
• impacting a proximal end of the instrument to provide force in the direction of the longitudinal tool axis and advance the second implant further between the adjacent vertebral bodies into an intervertebral space therebetween;
• moving the instrument to a second position wherein the support body of the second implant is rotatable with respect to the insert of the second implant;
• impacting a proximal end of the instrument to provide force in the direction of the longitudinal tool axis and advance the implant further into the intervertebral space and against the first implant to cause the second implant to rotate with respect to the longitudinal tool axis;
• and
• disassembling the instrument from the second implant and removing the instrument from the patient,
• wherein the first and second implants are each moved into their final implantation positions independently of one another whereby the first implant is articulated while attached to the insertion instrument to a first final location while the second implant is subsequently articulated while attached to the insertion instrument to a second final location.
