Abstract
In one embodiment the present invention comprises a bar code scanner and an encoder for commissioning RFID transponders and includes a housing encasing a motor assembly, an RFID interrogator, a wireless communication means for transferring instructions and data from and to a remote host, on-board memory, a processor, and an antenna with corresponding mechanism to encode and verify a programmable RFID transponder. The present invention further includes novel methods for commissioning RFID transponders.
Claims19
A method that provides unique object numbers for on-demand commissioning of RFID transponders using an RFID encoder having an internal memory to intermittently receive allocations of blocks of subdivided object class serial number space from an external numbering authority, the method comprised of:
- the external numbering authority allocating blocks from the allocations of blocks of subdivided object class serial number space, from a larger object class serial number space, to the encoder's internal memory for encoding unique object numbers into the RFID transponders as objects of an object class are presented to the encoder for RFID transponder encoding;
- the allocations of blocks of subdivided object class serial number space being allocated by subdividing the larger object class serial number space into sectors that are defined by a limited number of most significant bits of the object class serial numbers;
- and
- assigning to the RFD encoder the allocated blocks with reference to the starting number of each of the allocated blocks and the size of each of the allocated blocks that the RFID encoder is authorized to encode within an object class.
An encoder and applicator device for commissioning RFID transponders on-demand, allowing an operator of the device to encode and apply an RFID transponder in a single motion, the device comprising:
- an operator handle;
- a trigger embedded within the handle adapted to be actuated by the operator;
- a transponder separation means, used to separate a properly encoded RFID transponder from its release liner conveyance web, the means comprised of a peel device which allows an encoded RFID transponder to tip as it rotates around the peel device and allows its adhesive layer to stick directly onto a target surface;
- an internal bar code scanner that is used to acquire information to encode from printed indicia, the bar code scanner spatially aligned with the transponder separation means along a line of movement such that the operator can easily assure proper placement of the properly encoded RFID transponder in a single motion;
- a sensor that tracks displacement of the encoder and applicator device across the target surface allowing the attachment of the properly encoded transponder to the target surface along a vector that is nearly parallel to the target surface;
- and
- an interrogator used to encode an RFID transponder and verify the encoded RFID transponder immediately after encoding the RFID transponder and then again after the encoder and applicator device applies the properly encoded RFID transponder onto the target surface.
A plurality of commissioned RFID transponders each comprising a unique object number encoded by an encoder having an internal memory with at least one allocated block of subdivided object class serial number space stored therein;
- the allocated block having been allocated to the encoder's internal memory;
- the allocated block assigned to the encoder with reference to a block starting serial number and a block size number within a larger object class serial number space;
- the allocated block being one of a plurality of allocations intermittently received from an external encoding authority;
- the external encoding authority comprised of subdivisions of the larger object class serial number space into sectors that are defined by a limited number of most significant bits of the object class serial numbers;
- and
- the unique object number encoded into one of the plurality of RFID transponders as an object of the object class is presented to the encoder.
