Abstract
A device and methods for treating renal failure are disclosed. One embodiment of the device is an implantable peritoneal dialysis device. When in use, the device can have a semi-permeable reservoir implanted in the peritoneal cavity. The reservoir can receive blood waste and drain through one or more conduits, via a pump, to the biological bladder. Solids and/or a solution benefiting dialysis can be pumped to the reservoir and/or implanted in the peritoneal cavity.
Claims58
An implantable peritoneal dialysis device for a subject having a peritoneal cavity and a bladder, comprising:
- a subcutaneous pump adapted for fluidic communication with the peritoneal cavity and with the bladder;
- a discharge conduit adapted for coupling between the peritoneal cavity and the subcutaneous pump;
- an exit conduit adapted for coupling between the bladder and the subcutaneous pump;
- a subcutaneous reservoir configured to store a fluid;
- a reservoir conduit coupled between the subcutaneous reservoir and the subcutaneous pump;
- and
- an implantable distributor operatively coupled to the subcutaneous pump, the distributor selectable between a first position wherein the pump moves the fluid from the subcutaneous reservoir through the reservoir conduit and into the peritoneal cavity through the discharge conduit and a second position wherein the pump moves the fluid from the peritoneal cavity through the discharge conduit and into the bladder through the exit conduit.
The device of 4, wherein the bladder sensor is configured to sense pH within the bladder.
An implantable peritoneal dialysis device for a subject having a peritoneal cavity and a bladder, comprising:
- a reservoir configured to store a fluid;
- an implantable pump adapted for fluidic communication with the peritoneal cavity, the bladder and the reservoir;
- a discharge conduit adapted for coupling between the peritoneal cavity and the implantable pump;
- an exit conduit adapted for coupling between the bladder and the implantable pump;
- a reservoir conduit coupled between the reservoir and the implantable pump, wherein the implantable pump is configured to pump the fluid from the reservoir through the reservoir conduit and into the peritoneal cavity through the discharge conduit and to subsequently pump the fluid from the peritoneal cavity through the discharge conduit into the bladder through the exit conduit;
- and an implantable controller associated with the implantable pump, the implantable controller configured to monitor a physiologic parameter, the controller programmed to adjust a rate at which the fluid is pumped between the reservoir, the peritoneal cavity and the bladder responsive to a value of the monitored physiologic parameter.
