Diels-Alder crosslinkable dendritic nonlinear optical chromophore compounds, films and crosslinked polymer composites formed from the chromophore compounds, methods for making and using the chromophore compounds, films, and crosslinked polymer composites, and electro-optic devices that include films and crosslinked polymer composites formed from the chromophore compounds.

A compound having the formula (I):
- wherein
- D is a π-electron donor group,
- A is a π-electron acceptor group,
- D1 is a dendron moiety functionalized with one or more crosslinkable groups,
- D2 is a dendron moiety functionalized with one or more crosslinkable groups,
- n is 0, 1, or 2,
- m is 0, 1, or 2, and
- m+n is ≧1,
- wherein the crosslinkable groups are independently selected from the group consisting of an anthracenyl group and an acrylate group.
