## Abstract

The present invention provides vectors that contain and express in vivo the genes encoding VP2 and VP5 of African Horse Sickness Virus or an epitope thereof that elicits an immune response in a horse against African horse sickness virus, compositions comprising said vectors, methods of vaccination against African horse sickness virus, and kits for use with such methods and compositions.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An immunogenic composition comprising
a recombinant poxvirus wherein the recombinant poxvirus comprises two nucleic acid molecules encoding polypeptides African Horse Sickness Virus (AHSV) VP2 and AHSV VP5; and wherein the composition is capable of eliciting a protective immune response in an equine animal.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the VP2 polypeptide is encoded by the sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:4 and the VP5 polypeptide is encoded by the sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:5.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the nucleic acid molecule comprises a sequence having at least 95% sequence identity to a polynucleotide having the sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:17.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the poxvirus comprises a nucleic acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:17.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 further comprising a carboxypolymethylene adjuvant.

### Claim 6

An expression vector comprising one or more polynucleotide selected from the sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:4, the sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO:5, and the combination of both.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The vector of claim 6, wherein the the vector comprises both SEQ ID NOs: 4 and 5.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The vector of claim 7, wherein the vector is a viral vector, and wherein the viral vector is an avipox, a canarypox or a fowlpox vector.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The vector of claim 8, wherein the vector comprises both SEQ ID NO:4 and SEQ ID NO:5.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The vector of claim 8, wherein the polynucleotide is operably linked to a promoter selected from the group consisting of H6 vaccinia promoter, I3L vaccinia promoter, 42K poxviral promoter, 7.5K vaccinia promoter, and Pi vaccinia promoter.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The vector of claim 9, wherein SEQ ID NO:2 is operably linked to the H6 vaccinia promoter and SEQ ID NO:5 is operably linked to the 42K poxviral promoter.

### Claim 12 (depends on 6)

An isolated host cell transformed with the vector of claim 6.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

A method for inducing an immunological response in an animal comprising administering to the host an effective amount of the composition of claim 1.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

A method of vaccinating an animal susceptible to African Horse Sickness comprising administering at least one dose of the composition of claim 1.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1, 14)

The method of claim 14 further comprising administering at least a second dose of the composition of claim 1.
