Communication system fault location using signal ingress detection

A method for locating shielding flaws in a cable communication system, said method comprising steps of

• monitoring amplitude of radio frequency signals ingressing into said cable communication system at a shielding flaw, said amplitude tending to vary with proximity of a transmitter to a location of said shielding flaw permitting said ingressing of radio frequency signals,
• communicating a perceptible signal to a user indicating said amplitude, and
• controlling signal strength of radio frequency signals transmitted for ingress into said cable communication system in accordance with said monitoring step to limit a level of said ingress signal in said cable communication system while compensating said perceptible signal for change of said signal strength of radio frequency signals transmitted for ingress into said cable communication system whereby said perceptible signal provides an indication of proximity of a transmitter of said radio frequency signals to said location of said shielding flaw permitting ingress.
