Abstract
A medical/surgical irrigator with a handpiece for discharging a lavage solution. There is reservoir in which a therapeutic agent is stored. The therapeutic agent can be selectively mixed with the lavage solution to form a blended solution. The mixing can be performed selectively so as to make it possible to sequentially apply the blended solution or a basic (lavage only) solution.
Claims20
A medical/surgical lavage assembly, said assembly including:
- a handpiece;
- an electrically actuated pump disposed in said handpiece for discharging a lavage solution from said handpiece, said pump having an inlet and outlet;
- a supply tube that extends from said handpiece and that is connected to the pump inlet, said supply tube having at a proximal end thereof a connector for establishing a fluid connection to a container holding lavage solution;
- a cartridge disposed between said supply tube and the lavage solution container, said cartridge having:
- a connector for establishing a fluid connection to the container;
- a reservoir for holding a therapeutic agent;
- a mixing chamber for receiving from said cartridge connector the lavage solution and from said reservoir the therapeutic agent in which the lavage solution and the thereapeutic agent are mixed to form a blended solution;
- and an outlet downstream from said mixing chamber, said outlet configured to receive said supply tube connector so that the solution blended in the mixing chamber is supplied to the handpiece pump;
- and
- a tip assembly that extends from said handpiece, said tip assembly having a discharge tube that is connected to the pump outlet through which solution discharged by said pump is discharged to a target medical/surgical site.
A medical/surgical lavage assembly, said assembly comprising:
- a handpiece;
- a first pump disposed in said handpiece for discharging a lavage solution from the handpiece, said first pump being electrically actuated and having an inlet and an outlet;
- a supply tube that extends from said handpiece and that is connected to the inlet of said first pump, said supply tube having at a proximal end thereof a connector for establishing a fluid connection to a container holding lavage solution;
- a tip assembly having a discharge tube adapted for connection to the handpiece to receive solution discharged from the outlet of said first pump, the discharge tube having a distal end through which the solution is applied to a target medical/surgical site;
- a reservoir attached to said tip assembly for storing a therapeutic agent, said reservoir including:
- an outlet directed to the target medical/surgical site;
- and a second pump separate from said first pump that is actuated independently of said first pump, said second pump being a manually operated pump that, when actuated, discharges therapeutic agent from said reservoir out of the reservoir outlet to the target medical/surgical site;
- and
- a connection assembly attached to at least one the handpiece or tip assembly for releasably holding the tip assembly, including said reservoir and said second pump, to the handpiece.
A medical/surgical lavage assembly, said assembly comprising:
- a handpiece, said handpiece containing a reservoir for storing a therapeutic solution, said reservoir having an outlet;
- a first pump disposed in said handpiece for discharging a lavage solution from said handpiece, said first pump being electrically actuated and having an inlet and an outlet;
- a supply tube that extends from said handpiece and that is connected to the inlet of said first pump, said supply tube having at the proximal end thereof a connector for establishing a fluid connection to a container holding lavage solution;
- and
- a tip assembly having a first discharge tube adapted for connection to the outlet of said first pump to receive solution discharged from said first pump, said first discharge tube having a distal end through which the solution is applied to a target medical/surgical site;
- and
- a second pump separate from and operated independently from said first pump mounted to said handpiece for selectively drawing the therapeutic agent from said reservoir and discharging the therapeutic agent through the reservoir outlet towards the medical/surgical target site.
