Method and apparatus for providing ringing timeout disconnect supervision in remote telephone extensions using voice over packet-data-network systems (VOPS)

An apparatus for routing integrated traffic comprising data, voice, and video traffic, the apparatus comprising:

• a digital voice module to receive digital voice traffic;
• a voice compression module to compress the voice traffic wherein the voice compression module comprises one or more digital signal processors, each digital signal processor including at least one channel to process the digitized voice traffic;
• a plurality of resource pools to logically indicate an allocation status of the one or more digital signal processors, the allocation status dictating a resource pool of the plurality of resource pools to which the one or more digital signal processors or the at least one channel of the one or more digital signal processors is logically assigned;
• a resource manager module to dynamically allocate a channel of a digital signal processor to process the digitized voice traffic and to logically assign the at least one channel of the one or more digital signal processors to a corresponding resource pool based on the dynamic allocation of the channel;
• and
• a multiservice trunk module configurable to support a plurality of networking formats wherein the multiservice trunk module routes integrated traffic over a wide area network.
