Abstract
Methods for the manufacture of 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine are disclosed. Improved methods are provided for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane. Methods are also disclosed for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine and for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from carbon tetrachloride ethylene, and chlorine.
Claims15
A process for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene, the process comprising:
- (i) reacting 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane with chlorine in the presence of ferric chloride to produce crude 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane;
- (ii) feeding the crude 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane into a reaction zone, to transform the crude 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane into 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene and hydrogen chloride by dehydrochlorination, wherein the 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene and hydrogen chloride are removed from the reaction zone during the course of the dehydrochlorination reaction;
- and
- (iii) collecting 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene.
A process for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene, the process comprising the steps of:
- (i) introducing 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane, chlorine, and ferric chloride to a first vessel to thereby form a reaction mixture within the first vessel;
- (ii) allowing the reaction mixture to form 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane within the first vessel;
- (iii) removing a first product stream from the first vessel, where the first product stream includes 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane;
- (iv) introducing the first product stream to a second vessel;
- (v) heating the first product stream within the second vessel to thereby convert the 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane to 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene and thereby form a second product stream that includes the 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene;
- and
- (vi) separating the 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from the second product stream.
