Abstract
Bone cages are disclosed including devices for biocompatible implantation. The structures of bone are useful for providing living cells and tissues as well as biologically active molecules to subjects.
Claims15
A method for delivering one or more biologically active molecules to a subject, comprising:
- providing one or more biologically active molecules;
- providing one or more devices with a semi-permeable component including a confluent tissue coating of blood brain barrier capillary endothelial cells;
- at least one structural component that is at least partially composed of porous bone that is in contact with and supports the semi-permeable component;
- the semi-permeable component substantially surrounds the at least one structural component;
- and
- an internal cavity that is substantially surrounded by the semi-permeable component and at least a portion of the porous bone;
- the one or more biologically active molecules included in the pores and/or the cavity of the one or more devices;
- and implanting in the subject one or more of the devices containing the biologically active molecules;
- wherein at least one characteristic of the blood brain barrier capillary endothelial cells is different from the at least one corresponding characteristic of peripheral capillary endothelial cells.

- wherein the one or more devices form an internal cavity that is substantially surrounded by the semi-permeable component and at least a portion of the porous bone:
- implanting in the subject one or more of the devices;
- providing the one or more biologically active molecules into the internal cavity following implantation of the one or more devices into the subject;
- wherein at least one characteristic of the blood brain barrier capillary endothelial cells is different from the at least one corresponding characteristic of peripheral capillary endothelial cells.
