Abstract
Various embodiments of systems and methods for dynamically reallocating buffers used in communicating packets in various communication channels are disclosed. In some embodiments, a method may involve transmitting packets in several communication channels dependent on availability of buffers allocated among the communication channels; tracking a history of packet traffic in each of the communication channels; and dynamically reallocating one or more of the buffers dependent on the history.
Claims68
An apparatus, comprising:
- a plurality of interfaces each configured to transmit packets via a plurality of communication channels;
- a plurality of buffers coupled to the plurality of interfaces and configured to store at least a portion of each packet, wherein a portion of the plurality of buffers are allocated to a communication channel;
- a buffer allocation unit coupled to the plurality of interfaces and configured to generate history data indicative of relative traffic experienced in each of the communication channels, wherein the buffer allocation unit is configured to dynamically reallocate at least one of the portion of the plurality of buffers to an other communication channel in response to the history data.
A method, comprising:
- transmitting packets in a plurality of communication channels dependent on availability of plurality of buffers allocated among the plurality of communication channels;
- tracking a history of packet traffic in each of the plurality of communication channels;
- and
- dependent on the history, dynamically reallocating one or more of the plurality of buffers from a first one of the plurality of communication channels to a second one of the plurality of communication channels.

A method, comprising:
- a first node transmitting packets in a plurality of communication channels to a second node dependent on availability of a plurality of buffers included in the second node, wherein each of the plurality of buffers is allocated to one of the plurality of communication channels;
- and
- the second node dynamically reallocating one or more of the plurality of buffers from a first one of the plurality of communication channels to a second one of the plurality of communication channels;
- wherein said dynamically reallocating is performed independently of the second node receiving a packet from the first node.

An apparatus, comprising:
- means for transmitting packets in a plurality of communication channels dependent on availability of plurality of buffers allocated among the plurality of communication channels;
- means for tracking a history of packet traffic in each of the plurality of communication channels;
- and
- means for dynamically reallocating one or more of the plurality of buffers dependent on the history.
