Abstract
A device and method are disclosed for correctly restoring a read clock when there are a plurality of STM data stream transmission sources. In a CES device of an ATM communication system, ATM cells from respective connections, which are to be delivered to the same outgoing line, are accumulated in a reassembly buffer memory and a PLO control unit aggregates the amount of ATM cells accumulated in the reassembly buffer memory for each connection. Subsequently, the PLO control unit calculates the frequency of a read clock based on the amount of accumulated ATM cells for each connection. A PLO restores the read clock which is applied to read data from the reassembly buffer memory for delivery to an STM network.

A network device comprising:
- a terminating device to:
- receive a plurality of data streams via multiple connections to a plurality of communication lines, and
- identify a particular operating state of each of the connections;
- a counting device to determine an accumulated amount of data for each of the connections;
- a first controller to determine a target value for the accumulated data associated with each of the connections;
- a clock unit to generate a read clock for the accumulated data;
- and
- a second controller to determine a frequency of the read clock based on at least one of the determined accumulated amounts of data, the determined target values, or the determined operating states.
A network device comprising:
- a segmentation device to convert a plurality of data streams, received via multiple connections to a plurality of communication lines, from a first data format to a second data format;
- and
- a reassembly device including:
- a buffer to:
- accumulate data, in the second data format, from the data streams for each of the multiple connections,
- an operating state identifying unit to:
- detect a fault condition in a first connection, of the multiple connections,
- a clock restoring unit to:
- calculate, responsive to the fault condition, a frequency for a read clock, using a sum of the accumulated data for each of the connections but the first connection, and
- a clock calculating unit to:
- generate, using the calculated frequency, the read clock to be used in reading the accumulated data from the buffer.
A method performed in a network device, comprising:
- receiving, at a terminating device of the network device, a plurality of data streams via multiple connections to a plurality of communication lines;
- identifying, at the terminating device, a particular operating state of each of the connections;
- determining, at a counting device of the network device, an accumulated amount of data for each of the connections;
- determining, at a first controller of the network device, a target value for the accumulated data associated with each of the connections;
- generating, at a clock unit of the network device, a read clock for the accumulated data;
- and
- calculating, at a second controller, a frequency of the read clock based on at least one of the determined accumulated amounts of data, the determined target values, or the determined operating states.
