Abstract
A cryoplasty catheter and method for preventing or slowing reclosure of a lesion following angioplasty. The cryoplasty catheter includes a shaft having proximal and distal ends and a dilatation balloon disposed at the distal end. An intake lumen and exhaust lumen are defined by the shaft to deliver coolant to the balloon and to exhaust or drain coolant from the balloon. The method in accordance with the present invention includes cooling a lesion to aid in remodeling the lesion through dilatation and/or freezing a portion of the lesion adjacent the dilatation balloon to kill cells within the lesion to prevent or retard restenosis.
Claims20
A cryotherapy balloon catheter comprising:
- a shaft having a proximal region and a distal region, wherein the shaft defines an inflation lumen, a coolant lumen and an exhaust lumen;
- a cooling chamber disposed about the distal region of the shaft, wherein the cooling chamber is in fluid communication with the coolant lumen for receiving a coolant therein, and the cooling chamber is in fluid communication with the exhaust lumen for exhausting the coolant from the cooling chamber;
- and
- a balloon disposed around the cooling chamber and in fluid communication with the inflation lumen.
A cryotherapy balloon catheter for treating a lesion, the cryotherapy balloon catheter comprising:
- a shaft having a proximal region and a distal region, wherein the shaft defines a coolant lumen and an exhaust lumen, each lumen having a proximal end in the proximal region of the shaft and each lumen having a distal end in the distal region of the shaft;
- a balloon disposed about the distal region of the shaft such that the distal end of the coolant lumen and the distal end of the exhaust lumen are positioned within the balloon;
- and
- a first temperature sensor coupled to the balloon.
A cryotherapy balloon catheter comprising:
- a shaft having a proximal region and a distal region, wherein the shaft defines a first lumen extending at least partially therethrough, wherein the first lumen has a distal end in the distal region of the shaft;
- a coolant source coupled to a proximal end of the first lumen for providing a coolant therethrough;
- a cooling chamber disposed about the distal region of the shaft, wherein the cooling chamber is in fluid communication with the first lumen for receiving a coolant therein;
- and
- a balloon disposed around the cooling chamber and in fluid communication with an inflation source.
