Error recovery for application-level intermediaries

A storage device having thereon stored computer-executable instructions that are structured such that, when executed by one or more processors of a computing system, cause the computing system to perform a method for a computer-implemented intermediary service to distribute incoming messages from an incoming pool of application-level messages to a plurality of message consumers while incorporating error handling in case of a delivery failure, the method comprising:

• an act of performing a non-destructive exclusive read of a plurality of messages from an incoming pool of application-level messages, the plurality of messages to be processed transactionally as a whole;
• for each of the plurality of messages, identifying one or more corresponding destination messages consumers to be sent the corresponding message;
• an act of creating a first transaction;
• an act of beginning to execute a first attempt under the first transaction to send the plurality of messages to each of their one or more corresponding destination message consumers;
• an act of detecting that at least one of the plurality of messages failed to be delivered to at least one of its corresponding one or more destination message consumers;
• an act of creating a first record recording that the first attempt failed, the recording specifying at least that a first particular message was not able to be sent to a particular destination message consumer using a particular transmission channel that was attempted under the first transaction;
• in response to the act of detecting, an act of rolling back the first transaction while retaining the first record;
• subsequent to the first transaction being rolled back, an act of creating a second transaction to send the plurality of messages to the one or more destination message consumers;
• prior to attempting to send each of the plurality of messages to their one or more corresponding destination message consumers, an act of accessing the first record to determine whether there have been any previous failed attempts to send each of the plurality of messages to their corresponding destination message consumers during one or more previous transactions;
• upon determining that the first record fails to indicate that there has been at least one previous failed attempt to send a second particular message to its corresponding destination message consumer during a previous transaction, an act of executing a second attempt to send said second particular message to its corresponding destination message consumer using the first transmission channel under the second transaction;
• and
• upon determining that the first record indicates that there has been at least one previous failed attempt to send the first particular message to the particular destination message consumer during a previous transaction, an act of executing a second attempt to send the message to the particular destination message consumer using a second transmission channel under the second transaction.

A method for a computer-implemented intermediary service to distribute incoming messages from an incoming pool of application-level messages to a plurality of message consumers while incorporating error handling in case of a delivery failure, the method comprising:

• an act of performing a non-destructive exclusive read of a message from an incoming pool of application-level messages;
• an act of identifying a group of one or more message consumers that are to be sent the read message;
• an act of creating a first transaction;
• for each of at least one of the one or more message consumers in the group of message consumers that are to be sent the message, performing the following:
• an act of attempting to send the message to the corresponding message consumer using a first transmission channel under the first transaction;
• an act of detecting that the attempt to send the message using the first transmission channel under the first transaction failed;
• an act of super-transactionally recording that the attempt failed to deliver the message using the first transmission channel to the corresponding message consumer under the first transaction;
• an act of rolling back the first transaction while retaining the super-transactional recording corresponding to the at least one of the one or more message consumers;
• an act of creating a second transaction;
• for each of at least one of each of the one or more message consumers in the group of message consumers that are to be sent the message, performing the following:
• an act of accessing the corresponding super-transactional record indicating that the attempt to send the message using the first transmission channel to the corresponding message consumer under the first transaction failed;
• an act of identifying an alternative message consumer to dispatch the message to in lieu of sending the message to the corresponding message consumer;
• and
• an act of attempting to send the message to the alternative message consumer, the alternative message consumer comprising a destination that records failed delivery attempts.
