Abstract
The invention utilizes single and multiple frequency ultrasound generators driving single and multiple frequency resonant and harmonic transducer arrays at frequencies into the megasonic range. Generator signals that increase cavitation efficiency improve the performance of the cleaning, microbiological inactivation, sonochemistry or processing systems.

A method of generating a frequency drive signal within a defined frequency bandwidth comprising:
- providing a drive signal within a first frequency subrange during a first defined time period having a first duration, wherein:
- the drive signal is provided at a first frequency during a beginning portion of the first defined time period,
- the drive signal is provided at a second frequency during an ending portion of the first defined time period, and said first frequency subrange has a bandwidth less than ½ said defined bandwidth;
- providing the drive signal within a second frequency subrange during a second defined time period, wherein:
- the drive signal is provided at a third frequency during a beginning portion of the second defined time period, and
- the drive signal is provided at a fourth frequency during an ending portion of the second defined time period, and said second frequency subrange has a bandwidth less than ½ said defined bandwidth;
- and
- wherein said frequency drive signal does not have zero amplitude regions.

A method of generating a frequency drive signal comprising:
- providing a periodic frequency drive signal having a time period comprised of a first segment and a second segment;
- setting said periodic frequency drive signal to a first reference signal having a variable frequency during said first segment and to a second reference signal during said second segment;
- wherein said variable frequency is a constantly changing frequency within a defined frequency range having a bandwidth and a center frequency;
- and
- wherein said second reference signal is equal to said first reference signal with a constant frequency offset, and wherein said frequency drive signal does not have zero amplitude regions.

A method of generating a frequency drive signal with a defined bandwidth having a center frequency comprising:
- providing a frequency drive signal having a time duration comprised of a first segment and a second segment;
- setting said frequency drive signal to a first reference signal having a first variable frequency during said first segment and to a second reference signal having a second variable frequency during said second segment;
- wherein said first variable frequency is a changing frequency within a first defined frequency range included in said bandwidth;
- and
- wherein said second variable frequency is a changing frequency within a second defined frequency range included in said bandwidth;
- the frequency of said frequency drive signal at the end of said first segment is at least ⅓ said defined bandwidth offset in frequency from the frequency of the drive signal at the beginning for said second segment;
- and
- wherein said second defined frequency range does not overlap said first defined frequency range, and wherein said frequency drive signal does not have zero amplitude regions.
