Abstract
An instrument for deploying a cardiac valve prosthesis, including a plurality of radially expandable portions, at an implantation site, includes a plurality of deployment elements each independently operable to obtain the radial expansion of a radially expandable portion of the valve prosthesis. A method for deploying the cardiac valve prosthesis includes advancing the instrument to an implant site and independently actuating the radially expandable portions.
Claims20
A minimally-invasive method of implanting an expandable cardiac valve prosthesis including an annular inflow portion, an annular outflow portion, and an anchoring formation connecting the inflow portion to the outflow portion, at an implantation site having an annulus, the method comprising:
- positioning the cardiac valve prosthesis in a deployment instrument including first and second independently operable deployment elements, such that the annular inflow portion is located within the first element and the annular outflow portion is located within the second element and the anchoring formation protrudes radially outward beyond each of an inflow portion and an outflow portion, wherein the deployment instrument is configured to prevent axial movement of annular outflow portion when radially constrained;
- advancing the deployment instrument to the implantation site;
- manipulating the deployment instrument to align the anchoring formation with a corresponding sinus associated with the implantation site;
- actuating the first deployment element in a distal direction to allow the inflow portion of the prosthesis to expand and engage the annulus;
- and
- actuating the second element in a proximal direction to allow the outflow portion of the prosthesis to expand and engage the implantation site at a location downstream of the sinus.
A minimally-invasive method of implanting an expandable cardiac valve prosthesis at an implantation site including an annulus, the method comprising:
- positioning the cardiac valve prosthesis including an annular inflow portion, an annular outflow portion, and a plurality of anchoring formations connecting the inflow portion to the outflow portion in a deployment instrument such that the anchoring formations are able to protrude radially outward beyond the annular inflow portion and the annular outflow portion before and after deployment of the cardiac valve prosthesis, the deployment instrument including first and second independently operable deployment elements, the annular inflow portion located within the first element and the annular outflow portion located within the second element, wherein at least one of the first and second deployment elements is configured to releasably couple to the corresponding inflow or outflow portion;
- advancing the deployment instrument to a location near the aortic valve annulus, wherein during such advancing the plurality of anchoring formations define a diameter;
- actuating the first deployment element in a distal direction to allow the inflow portion of the prosthesis to expand and engage the annulus;
- and
- actuating the second deployment element in a proximal direction to allow the outflow portion of the prosthesis to expand and engage the implantation site at a location downstream of the sinus.
A minimally-invasive method of implanting an expandable cardiac valve prosthesis at an implantation site including an aortic valve annulus, the method comprising:
- advancing a prosthetic valve, including an annular inflow portion, an annular outflow portion, and a plurality of anchoring formations connecting the inflow portion to the outflow portion, to a location near the aortic valve annulus using a deployment instrument, the deployment instrument including first and second independently operable deployment elements, the annular inflow portion located within the first element and the annular outflow portion located within the second element and the anchoring formations protruding radially outward beyond the annular inflow portion and the annular outflow portion;
- moving the first deployment element in a first axial direction to allow the annular inflow portion of the prosthesis to expand and engage the aortic valve annulus;
- applying a torque to the proximal end of the deployment instrument to dispose the prosthetic at a desired radial position with respect to the sinuses of Valsalva;
- and
- moving the second deployment element in a second axial direction to allow the other corresponding annular portion of the prosthesis to expand and engage an aorta at a location distal to the aortic valve annulus;
- wherein the second deployment element is configured to prevent axial movement of the prosthesis.
