Abstract
Data tables that are required for the proper processing of font glyphs are automatically synthesized if they do not form part of an original font definition. The synthesized tables are stored in an annex file that is associated with the font, rather than being incorporated into the font definition. As a result, the integrity of the original font data is maintained, and does not adversely affect font protection systems that are based upon font data.

A computer-implemented method for automatically synthesizing a data table that includes information associated with glyphs in a font using a relationship table indicating relationships between respective glyphs referenced by font-independent identifiers, comprising the steps of:
- generating, by a computer, a font map that includes at least a font-dependent identifier and a font-independent identifier associated with respective glyphs in the font;
- and
- synthesizing, by the computer, the data table indicating the relationship between respective glyphs referenced by the font-dependent identifiers based on the generated font map.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium containing a program for execution on a computer to implement the method for automatically synthesizing a data table that includes information associated with glyphs in a font using a relationship table indicating relationships between respective glyphs identified by font-independent identifiers, the method comprising the steps of:
- generating a font map that includes at least a font-dependent identifier and a font-independent identifier associated with each of the respective glyphs in the font;
- and
- synthesizing the data table indicating the relationship between respective glyphs in the font identified by font-dependent identifiers based on the generated font map.
A method for generating an image containing characters, comprising the steps of:
- determining whether a font definition that is stored in a memory of a computer includes at least one font table operable to implement a font;
- if the font definition does not include the at least one font table, selecting between:
- (1) searching a separate annex, stored separate from the font definition, for at least one annex table associated with the font;
- and (2) synthesizing the at least one annex table associated with the font and storing the at least one synthesized annex table in the separate annex;
- and
- generating an image of the characters in accordance with the at least one annex table stored in the separate annex.
A method of managing images containing characters using a data table operable to implement a font, comprising the steps of:
- determining whether the data table used to implement the font is stored in memory in one of a font definition or a separate annex;
- responsive to the data table not being stored in the font definition or the separate annex, synthesizing the data table for persistent storage.
A non-transitory storage medium storing a program for execution by a computer to implement a method to generate an image containing characters, the method comprising the steps of:
- determining whether a font definition that is stored in a memory of a computer includes at least one font table operable to implement the font;
- if the font definition does not include the at least on font table, selecting between:
- (1) searching a separate annex, stored separate from the font definition, for at least one annex table associated with the font;
- and (2) synthesizing the at least one annex table associated with the font and storing the as least one synthesized annex table in the separate annex;
- and
- generating an image of the characters in accordance with the at least one annex table stored in the annex.
A non-transitory storage medium storing a program for execution by a computer to implement the method of managing images containing characters using a data table operable to implement a font, the method comprising the steps of:
- determining whether the data table used to implement the font is stored in memory in one of a font definition or a separate annex;
- responsive to the data table not being stored in a font definition or the separate annex, synthesizing the data table for persistent storage.
A system for generating images of characters, comprising:
- a font subsystem, which receives an identification of characters in a font, for determining whether a data table used to implement the font is stored in memory in one of a font definition or a separate annex, as a determined result;
- and
- a font table synthesizer for synthesizing the data table for persistent storage in the separate annex based on the determined result.
A font-table synthesizer for synthesizing a data table used to implement a font, the font-table synthesizer using a font map, the font-table synthesizer comprising:
- a mapping table which defines a relationship between respective information items using identifiers of a first type;
- and
- a synthesizer configured to synthesize the data table used to implement the font from the font map and the mapping table based on the relationship between the respective information items.
