A composition for promoting cartilage formation or repair, comprising a NELL peptide, wherein the NELL peptide is in an effective amount for cartilage formation or repair,
- wherein the NELL peptide comprises SEQ ID NO:
- 2, 4, or 6 or a fragment of SEQ ID NO:
- 2, 4, or 6;
- and
- wherein the composition is in an implantable formulation so as to promote cartilage formation or repair.
