Abstract
A method and apparatus is presented for reducing or eliminating pathological data patterns from signals for transmission over optical communications systems. One embodiment includes a decoder/deserializer configured to receive an encoded serial digital signal, a ditherer configured to dither a least significant bit of each digital data word, and a reserializer/encoder configured to serialize digital data and encode it, for example according to an applicable communication standard such as SMPTE 259M. The improvements may be provided in a single removable unit, such as a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) module compatible with existing optical communications equipment.
Claims20
A digital communicator comprising:
- an input port, said input port being adapted to receive encoded information;
- an output port, said output port being adapted to dispatch a modified output version of said encoded information;
- and
- a dithering device, said dithering device being signalingly coupled between said input port and said output port, said dithering device being adapted to selectively reversibly modify a least significant bit received within said encoded information for dispatch within said modified output version of said encoded information.
A digital communicator comprising:
- a first input port, said first input port being adapted to receive encoded information;
- a first output port, said first output port being adapted to dispatch a modified output version of said encoded information across a communication channel;
- a dithering device, said dithering device being signalingly coupled between said first input port and said first output port, said dithering device being adapted to reversibly modify a least significant bit received within said encoded information for dispatch within said modified output version of said encoded information;
- a second input port, said second input port being signalingly coupled to said second output port, said second input port being adapted to receive said modified output version of said encoded information;
- a second output port, said output port being adapted to dispatch a modified output version of said encoded information;
- an un-dithering device, said un-dithering device being signalingly coupled between said second input port and said second output port, said un-dithering device being adapted to reverse said modification of said least significant bit received within said modified output version of said encoded information for dispatch at said second output port.
A transmitter-receiver set comprising:
- means for reversibly breaking up at least one pathological data pattern within a serial digital signal by dithering a bit of said serial digital signal to produce a transmitted signal;
- means for transmitting said transmitted signal over a communication channel;
- and
- means for restoring said at least one pathological data pattern to said transmitted signal.
