Abstract
Devices and methods for filtering blood. The devices generally comprise a mesh for filtering blood flowing within a blood vessel, particularly within an artery such as the aorta, a structure adapted to open and close the mesh within the blood vessel, and a means to actuate the structure. The methods generally include the steps of introducing a mesh into a blood vessel to entrap embolic material, and removing the mesh and the entrapped foreign matter from the blood vessel.
Claims15
A blood filtration device for deployment out of a lumen of a tubular delivery device into a blood stream, the blood filtration device comprising:
- an elongate support member with a distal end extendable out of the lumen of the tubular delivery device;
- a closed loop defining an opening, wherein the distal end of the support member is connected to the closed loop;
- and
- a filter mesh supported by the closed loop, the filter mesh configured to filter blood passing through the opening of the closed loop;
- wherein the distal end of the elongate support member is configured to urge the closed loop and the filter mesh out of the delivery catheter so as to deploy the closed loop and filter mesh into the blood stream;
- and wherein the closed loop is sized to expand until an outer periphery of the closed loop abuts an inner wall of a surrounding vessel and wherein substantially all blood in the surrounding vessel passes through the filter mesh.
A method of deploying a blood filtration device, the method comprising:
- inserting a tubular delivery device into a blood stream of a patient;
- urging an elongate support member out of a lumen of the tubular delivery device so as to also urge, using only the elongate support member, a closed loop supporting a filter mesh out of the device into the blood stream of the patient;
- and
- expanding the filter mesh into a concave configuration defining a concavity;
- and filtering the blood by flowing the blood through an opening of the closed loop, into the concavity and through the filter mesh.
