Abstract
A ceramic composite and method of making are provided. The ceramic composite is transparent and serves as transparent armor. The composite provides adequate protection from projectiles while exhibiting large surface areas and relatively low areal densities.
Claims20
A composite transparent armor having a V50 of greater than 843 m/s for caliber .30 AP projectiles, the armor having a length or width greater than 25 cm, an areal density of less than 58.7 kg/m2 and a luminous transparency of greater than 75%.
A composite transparent armor having a V50 of greater than 835 m/s for a 7.62×51 mm M80 ball, the armor having a length or width greater than 25 cm, an areal density of less than 60.0 kg/m2 and a luminous transparency of greater than 75%.
A composite transparent armor having a V50 of greater than 858 m/s for a 7.62×54R B32 API projectile, the armor having a length or width greater than 25 cm, an areal density of less than 115 kg/m2 and a luminous transparency of greater than 75%.
A composite transparent armor having a V50 of greater than 918 m/s for a 7.62×51 AP-WC projectile, the armor having a length or width greater than 25 cm, an areal density of less than 200 kg/m2 and a luminous transparency of greater than 75%.
