Computer system operable to automatically reorganize files to avoid fragmentation

A method comprising:

• a computer system receiving an I/O request for accessing a first file stored on a storage device;
• in response to the I/O request, the computer system marking the first file for possible reorganization;
• in response to determining that the first file was marked for possible reorganization, the computer system determining whether the first file is in need of reorganization by checking the first file for fragmentation;
• and
• in response to determining that the first file is in need of reorganization, the computer system reorganizing the first file, wherein said reorganizing comprises rearranging data blocks of the first file so that the data blocks are stored at contiguous storage locations of the storage device.

A system comprising:

• memory storing program instructions;
• wherein the program instructions are executable by the one or more processors to:
• receive an I/O request for accessing a first file stored on a storage device;
• in response to the I/O request, mark the first file for possible reorganization;
• in response to determining that the first file was marked for possible reorganization, determine whether the first file is in need of reorganization by checking the first file for fragmentation;
• and
• in response to determining that the first file is in need of reorganization, reorganize the first file, wherein said reorganizing comprises rearranging data blocks of the first file so that the data blocks are stored at contiguous locations of the storage device.
