Abstract
Multiple-Input-Single-Output (MISO) amplification and associated VPA control algorithms are provided herein. According to embodiments of the present invention, MISO amplifiers driven by VPA control algorithms outperform conventional outphasing amplifiers, including cascades of separate branch amplifiers using conventional power combiner technologies. MISO amplifiers can be operated at enhanced efficiencies over the entire output power dynamic range by blending the control of the power source, source impedances, bias levels, outphasing, and branch amplitudes. These blending constituents are combined to provide an optimized transfer characteristic function.

An apparatus for at least power amplification , comprising:
- circuitry that generates a plurality of control signals;
- circuitry that generates a plurality of substantially constant envelope signals using a reference signal and said control signals;
- and
- a multiple input single output (MISO) node that combines said substantially constant envelope signals to generate an output signal;
- wherein said MISO node is controlled by controlling one or more of:
- (a) an outphasing angle between said substantially constant envelope signals;
- (b) bias control signals of said MISO node;
- (c) amplitude control signals of said MISO node;
- (d) power supply control signals of said MISO node;
- and
- (e) impedance control signals of said MISO node.
