Abstract
A polymerization reaction mixture for the cationic polymerization of unsaturated biological oils (e.g. vegetable oils and animals oils) based on the cationic reaction of double bonds initiated by superacids is provided. The polymerized oils have a viscosity about 10 to 200 times higher than the initial oil and relatively high unsaturation (only about 10-30% lower than that of initial oils).

A cationic polymerization reaction mixture comprising:
- at least one biological oil containing an unsaturated fatty acid ester;
- and
- a superacid catalyst selected from the group consisting of tetrafluoroboric acid (HBF4), triflic acid (CF3SO3H), and hexafluoroantimonic acid (HSbF6).
A cationic polymerization reaction mixture comprising:
- at least one biological oil containing an unsaturated fatty acid ester;
- and
- a superacid catalyst selected from the group consisting of hexafluorophosphoric acid (HPF6), hexafluoroarsenic acid (HAsF6), hexafluorotantalum acid (HTaF6), hexafluoroniobium acid (HNbF6), HCB10Cl11, and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid (HF).
A cationic polymerization reaction mixture comprising:
- at least one biological oil containing an unsaturated fatty acid ester;
- and
- a superacid catalyst defined according to the formula CF3-(CF2)x-SO3H,
- wherein x is an integer between 1-20.
A cationic polymerization reaction mixture comprising:
- at least one biological oil containing an unsaturated fatty acid ester;
