Abstract
A process for preparing water-absorbing polymer beads by polymerizing droplets of a monomer solution in a gas phase surrounding the droplets, the initiator being added to the monomer solution from 0.5 to 60 seconds before the droplets are generated.

A process for preparing water-absorbing polymer beads by polymerizing droplets of a monomer solution comprising
- a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer,
- b) at least one crosslinker,
- c) at least one initiator,
- d) water,
- in a gas phase surrounding the droplets, which have a mean diameter of at least 200 μm, which comprises adding the initiator c) to the monomer solution from 0.5 to 30 seconds before the droplets are generated.
