Abstract
A method and apparatus for producing a calcium carbonate product formed of small <100 μm sized separate calcium carbonate particles. Calcium hydroxide is fed through a disintegration and spraying apparatus (14), operating on the principle of a pin mill, into a gas which contains carbon dioxide for precipitating calcium carbonate particles and which is inside a precipitation reactor (10). The temperature in the precipitation reactor is maintained at <65° C.
Claims28
A method for producing a calcium carbonate product in one or several sequential precipitation reactors, said method comprising:
- feeding carbon dioxide into a precipitation vessel of a precipitation reactor,
- feeding calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), or other corresponding Ca++ ion source, into said precipitation vessel,
- maintaining a temperature in said precipitation vessel of less than 65° C., either
- a) by cooling said precipitation reactor by means of cooling elements, or
- b) by circulating a material which contains calcium carbonate, and/or a gas which contains carbon dioxide, to a cooler from said precipitation vessel and back to said precipitation vessel from said cooler, and
- precipitating calcium carbonate particles having a size of less than 100 nm in said precipitation vessel,
- wherein the calcium hydroxide, or other corresponding Ca++ source, is fed to said precipitation vessel through a disintegration and spraying apparatus which is located inside said precipitation vessel, and
- wherein said disintegration and spraying apparatus operates on the principle of a pin mill.
