In a cellular interception system, an information processing method for converting information of several cellular-network wireless messages from a first encrypted format under a session key, where each message is encrypted by a cellular ciphering algorithm chosen out of a collection of one or more cellular ciphering algorithms under the session key, to a second unencrypted format comprising: (A) divide the messages in the first format into two sets; the first set containing messages encrypted under the same encryption algorithm, and a second set containing the remaining messages. (B) subject the messages in the first set to a ciphertext-only cryptanalysis of a cellular encryption algorithm to recover the session key. (C) for each message in the second set, subject the message together with the recovered session key to the corresponding cellular ciphering algorithm to receive the message's information in the second format.

The present invention relates to cryptanalysis methods, and more particularly to ciphertext-only cryptanalysis of GSM encrypted communications received off the air.
The present invention is scheduled to be published as a scientific paper and presented in Crypto 2003 conference, Aug. 17-21, 2003, Santa Barbara, Calif., USA.
This section details the need for the present invention, prior art cryptanalysis methods and the encryption method now used in GSM.
FIG. 1 illustrates a GSM cell with a base station, a subscriber and an attacker system.
FIG. 2 details a block diagram of the attacker system.
FIG. 3 details a block diagram of another embodiment of the attacker system.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
FIG. 1 illustrates a GSM cell 11 with a base station 12, a subscriber 13 and an attacker system 14. There are wireless links 21, 22, 23 between these units.
FIG. 2 details a block diagram of the attacker system. The system may be used to implement the methods detailed in the present disclosure. The attacker system comprises a first transceiver 31 with antenna 32, which communicates with a target subscriber set, and a second transceiver 33 with antenna 34, which communicates with a base station. The system also includes a computer/controller 36, which controls the operation of the system, is controlled by the operator and displays the results of the decryption. The computer 36 also allows the operator to listen to the target phone's communications.
