Abstract
A system, method, and apparatus for reducing the video decoder processing requirements are presented herein. During a rewind operation, a reference picture for a group of pictures is decoded and stored into a reference frame buffer. By storing a reference picture for the group, the reference picture need not be decoded to display each picture in the group during the rewind operation.

A method of displaying pictures, said method comprising:
- storing a fully decoded midpoint picture in an EP to EP stream in a frame buffer;
- periodically providing for display pictures between the midpoint picture and a last picture in the EP to EP stream in reverse order;
- storing a fully decoded entry point picture in the EP to EP stream;
- and
- periodically providing for display pictures between the fully decoded entry point picture and the midpoint picture in the EP to EP stream in reverse order.

A system for displaying pictures, said system comprising:
- a frame buffer for storing a fully decoded midpoint picture in an EP to EP stream in a frame buffer;
- a display engine for periodically providing for display pictures between the midpoint picture and a last picture in the EP to EP stream in reverse order;
- wherein a fully decoded entry point picture in the EP to EP stream is stored;
- and
- wherein the display engine periodically provides for display pictures between the fully decoded entry point picture and the midpoint picture in the EP to EP stream in reverse order.

- an integrated circuit, said integrated circuit comprising:
- a non-transitory computer readable medium storing a plurality of instructions, said instructions comprising:
- storing a fully decoded midpoint picture in an EP to EP stream in a frame buffer;
- periodically providing for display pictures between the midpoint picture and a last picture in the EP to EP stream in reverse order;
- storing a fully decoded entry point picture in the EP to EP stream;
- and
- periodically providing for display pictures between the fully decoded entry point picture and the midpoint picture in the EP to EP stream in reverse order;
- and
- a processor operably connected to the non-transitory computer readable medium for executing the plurality of instructions.
