A process for the synthesis of a quasi one-dimensional structure comprising a metal oxide comprising a transition metal having a quasi one-dimensional structure comprising a transition metal dichalcogenide or fine crystallites of a transition metal dichalcogenide, the process comprising a chemical reaction of a quasi one-dimensional material comprising a nanowire having a diameter less than about one micrometer, the material having a formula M6CyHz, 8.2<y+z≦10, where M comprises a transition metal selected from Mo, W, Ta, and Nb, C comprises a chalcogen selected from S, Se, and Te, H comprises a halogen comprising I, whereby the said quasi one-dimensional material is first heated in the air or otherwise in the presence of oxygen, at an elevated temperature and transformed into a quasi one-dimensional metal oxide comprising a transition metal, the quasi one-dimensional metal oxide having a formula MOX, 0.3<x≦3, where M comprises a transition metal selected from Mo, W, Ta, and Nb, and O comprises oxygen;
- and said quasi one-dimensional metal oxide is chemically transformed using a gas containing a reactive reagent containing a chalcogen, whereby the process occurs at an elevated temperature.
