Abstract
An apparatus and methods are provided for heating and sensing the temperature of a chemical reaction chamber without direct physical contact between a heating device and the reaction chamber, or between a temperature sensor and the reaction chamber. A plurality of chemical reaction chambers can simultaneously or sequentially be heated independently and monitored separately.
Claims16
A heating system comprising:
- a non-contact radiant heater;
- a non-contact radiant temperature sensor;
- a heatable device including a chemical reaction chamber having a volume of about 10 ml or less, the heatable device being spaced from the non-contact radiant heater spaced from the non-contact radiant temperature sensor, and positioned for the chemical reaction chamber to receive heat irradiated by the non-contact radiant heater and for the chemical reaction chamber to radiate heat toward the non-contact radiant temperature sensor;
- and
- an optically transparent cover at least partially defining the chemical reaction chamber.

A method of heating a biochemical sample comprising:
- providing a heatable device that includes a plurality of reaction chambers;
- rotating one of the plurality of reaction chambers to align a first one of the plurality of reaction chambers with a non-contact radiant heaters and a non-contact radiant temperature sensors;
- heating the first one of the plurality of reaction chambers with a the non-contact radiant heater that is spaced from the heatable device;
- and
- sensing a temperature of the first one of the plurality of reaction chambers with a the non-contact temperature sensor that is spaced from the heatable device.

A method of heating a biochemical sample comprising:
- providing a heatable device that includes a plurality of reaction chambers;
- rotating at least one of the heatable device, a non-contact radiant heater, and a non-contact radiant temperature sensor to align a first one of the plurality of reaction chambers with one of the radiant heater and one of the radiant temperature sensor;
- heating the reaction chamber with the non-contact radiant heater spaced from the heatable device;
- and
- sensing a temperature of the reaction chamber with the non-contact temperature sensor spaced from the heatable device;
- and
- adjusting a radiation output of the non-contact radiant heater based on a temperature of the reaction chamber sensed by the non-contact temperature sensor.
