Abstract
A spoked wheel is described that uses flexible spokes having a termination on each end that couple with a rim using nipples. The flexible spokes are supported mid-span by a hub flange cradle that transfers torque from the hub to the rim via two sub-spokes. The hub flange cradle determines whether a sub-spoke is tangential or radial. A plurality of spokes may be used on each side of the wheel.
Claims15
A bicycle wheel having flexible spokes comprising:
- a wheel rim having a predefined even number n of spoke couplings along an inner circumference, the wheel rim further having a surface for attachment of a bicycle tire;
- s flexible spokes, where
- s

- ,
- each flexible spoke having a length defined by two end terminations, wherein a termination couples with a spoke coupling;
- and
- a rotatable wheel hub comprising:
- a hub body positioned approximately at a rotational center of the wheel rim;
- a left flange separated by a predefined axial distance along the hub body from a right flange, the left and right flanges extend radially outward toward the wheel rim from the hub body and have a radial edge;
- a left flange outer surface that converges towards the wheel rim spoke couplings and a right flange outer surface that converges towards the wheel rim spoke couplings;
- and
- c cradles, where c=s, located on the left and right flange outer surfaces, each cradle comprising:
- a groove having two ends that open at a flange radial edge;
- a groove cross section configured to receive a flexible spoke;
- and
- a curve defined between the groove ends.

A flexible spoke comprising:
- a cable having a length defined by two end terminations, each termination comprising:
- a terminal having a first aperture in line with a second aperture, wherein an expanding interior cavity in the terminal is defined between the first and second apertures;
- and
- a plug having an outside geometry conforming to the expanding interior cavity wherein the first aperture receives a cable end, the second aperture receives the plug, and individual strands of the cable fill a space defined between the expanding interior cavity and plug, wherein cable tension increases the compression load of the plug and the plug grips the individual cable strands and distributes the compressive force between the plug and expanding interior cavity;
- and
- an external jacket comprising:
- a first element being wound in a helical pattern along the surface of the jacket from one terminal for a first predefined cable length;
- and
- a second element being wound in a helical pattern along the surface of the jacket from the other terminal for a second predefined cable length, wherein the first and second elements are separated by a third predefined cable length from each other defining a central cable portion for engaging a hub.

A wheel hub comprising:
- a hub body;
- a left flange separated by a predefined axial distance along the hub body from a right flange, the left and right flanges extend radially from the hub body and have a radial edge;
- a left flange outer surface that converges towards a wheel median plane M which is orthogonal to a hub axis midpoint, and a right flange outer surface that converges towards the wheel median plane M;
- a left flange inner surface that converges towards the wheel median plane M and a right flange inner surface that converges towards the wheel median plane M;
- a first cradle located on an inner or outer surface of the left flange;
- and
- a second cradle located on an inner or outer surface of the right flange, each cradle comprising:
- a groove having two ends that open at a flange radial edge;
- a groove cross section configured to receive a flexible spoke;
- and
- a curve defined between the groove ends.
